FREQUENTLY ASKED QUESTIONS

Each apparatus is able to handle different types of emergencies, but at the same time each one has one specialization.  We utilize a response guide to match the appropriate apparatus to the emergency.  That way we always have the right tools.

Residents of Sparta are covered by the property taxes that they, or their landlord pay each year.

Residents outside the city limits pay an annual subscription fee for coverage.

Other situations not covered by these can result in charges.

Copies of incident reports may be obtained by filing a Freedom of Information Act request with the City of Sparta.

Technically speaking, the differences are as follows:

  • An Engine (also known as a pumper) specializes in fire suppression activities.
  • A Truck (or an Aerial / Tower) specializes in rooftop operations, coordinated ventilation as well as search & rescue.
  • A rescue apparatus specializes in various technical aspects of firefighting including, but not limited to: rope rescue, vehicle extrication and more.  As such it is designed to carry the tools necessary to complete those tasks.

Sparta Fire Department is a member of an organization called M.A.B.A.S, which stands for Mutual Aid Box Alarm System.  This system is a mutually assured protection program that each department in Randolph County is part of.  As such, if we should require assistance we can call on other departments the same way that they can call on us for assistance.

If you smell an odor of Gas in your house, leave the premises immediately and dial 911.  The appropriate emergency services will be notified to investigate.
